Year 1 2021-2022
This year our Year 1 and 2 classes are mixed, this decision was made following the Covid lockdowns to ensure the best learning experiences and opportunities for the children. In the mornings following registration the Year 1 and Year 2 children attend separate groupings for phonics, literacy and maths before returning to their classes for topic work.
This year the classes are:
Kingfisher Class - taught by Mrs Mistry
Osprey Class - taught by Miss Sanghera
Songthrush Class - taught by Mrs Ford
Year 1 2020-2021
We were very sad not to be able to welcome the majority of children back into school after the Christmas holidays however the children have impressed us with their amazing home learning. This term we are studying the topic Moon Zoom with a particular focus on the curriculum areas of History and Design and Technology. The children have been enjoying learning about space travel and the moon and share their work with us in photos and videos every day. We have also learnt about some amazing people in our topic such as Katherine Johnson the human ‘computer’ who overcame many challenges to become one of the first African-American women to work as a NASA scientist and helped send the Apollo 11 mission into space, and Neil Armstrong the first man on the moon.
In phonics we have been working on our Phase 5 phonics and the children are great at recognising and applying alternate graphemes and some of those tricky spellings. They have been applying their learning in their literacy with activities such as creating a poster about Katherine Johnson and designing and writing about a moon buggy. They always try to make their writing exciting with a focus this term on using adjectives and different punctuation such as exclamation marks and question marks.
In maths we started the term looking at place value for numbers to 20 and then moved onto addition and subtraction for numbers to 20. The children have been amazing at recognising and using their mathematical symbols including greater than and less than, well done. We’re now challenging ourselves with applying our skills to numbers up to 50!
Keep up the great work Year 1!
We were very excited to welcome our children back to school this year after home learning during the summer term. The Cuckoos, Owls and Robins were excited to see their teachers and friends and get back to learning in school. They have been super at following Covid 19 guidelines and we are all now super hand washers!
Our first topic this term was ‘Once Upon A Time’ which focussed upon traditional stories. This enabled the Year 1s to use the reading and writing skills they developed across their Reception year to read and write traditional tales. They have continued this learning in continuous and enhanced provision activities from building bridges for goats to beds for Goldilocks. In maths the children have continued their mastery approach with the White Rose Maths scheme and are fantastic at using tens frames, part part whole models, number lines and bar models to answer addition and subtraction problems.
